Pocket Full of Pixie Dust

The pixie in my pocket hammered her tiny fists against the thick fabric, a muffled series of pathetic thumps. I ignored her, the weight of her desperation a feather against my greed. Tonight, I'd be richer than I'd ever dreamed. Her dust, a shimmering powder rumored to grant the user fleeting visions, fetched a high price in the shadowed corners of the Obsidian Market. A faint, acrid smell began to permeate the air. I paused, sniffing cautiously. It was coming from my pocket, growing stronger. Panic flared. Pixie dust was volatile, especially when mixed with fear. I had to get her out, *now*. I fumbled with the button of my coat, muttering a curse under my breath. The air around my pocket shimmered, and a plume of sickly green smoke puffed out, stinging my eyes and filling the alley with the stench of burnt sugar.

The acrid smoke billowed, choking me. I coughed, desperately trying to unbutton my coat before the whole alley went up in pixie-dust flames. The pixie thrashed harder, her terror amplified by the smoke. "Quiet!" I hissed, but the sound was lost in my coughing. The air crackled with building energy. She was going to explode us both. Out of sheer panic, I smacked my pocket, a quick, sharp blow with the heel of my hand. Hopefully, a shock to the system would calm her, or at least… silence her. She couldn't be scared if she was knocked out.

Before I could react, a monstrous *POOF* erupted from my pocket. The sickly green smoke billowed, obscuring everything. Coughing, I stumbled backward, tripping over a discarded crate. Then, through the dissipating cloud, I saw it – the pixie, but impossibly huge. No longer a delicate sprite, she was now a giant furball with miniature, furiously flapping wings, bouncing off the grimy brick walls of the alley. Her terrified squeals echoed as she ricocheted, a fluffy wrecking ball. One particularly violent bounce sent her careening into the Obsidian Market itself. Stalls selling everything from dried gargoyle wings to enchanted glowstones went flying as she plowed through, a chaotic explosion of produce, potions, and panicked screams erupting in her wake.

I staggered back, coughing, the charred smell clinging to the back of my throat. The pixie was gone, undoubtedly vaporized. My payday, along with her, had gone up in smoke. As the smoke cleared, I noticed a strange marking on the ground beneath me. It wasn't there before, I was sure of it. A glowing sigil, etched into the cobblestones, pulsed with an otherworldly energy. Intricate lines of light throbbed beneath my feet, radiating a warmth that belied the chill of the Obsidian Market. It beckoned me, a silent invitation to uncover its secrets. I knelt, mesmerized, and reached out a trembling hand.

The green smoke billowed, acrid and thick, stinging my nostrils. My eyes watered, blurring the already indistinct shapes of the Obsidian Market. I felt the air change, a sudden drop in temperature that raised goosebumps on my arms. It was more than just the chill night air; it felt like a shift in the very atmosphere, a prickling of unease that settled deep in my gut. From the deepest shadows of the alley, a cloaked figure emerged. The acrid smoke swirled around them, momentarily obscuring their form before catching the faint light of a nearby lamp. It cast an eerie glow on their face, highlighting eyes that shone with an unnatural green intensity. They spoke, their voice a low, rasping whisper that seemed to slither into my mind. "Careful what you wish for."
