A long time ago, Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth. Mary was very young and engaged to Joseph, who worked as a carpenter (that is, a craftsman). One day, an angel appeared to Mary and told her she would have a very special child: the Son of God. This was a big surprise for Mary! Joseph was confused at first, but an angel also appeared to him and explained that this child was sent by God. After that, Joseph was ready to take care of Mary and the baby. Not long after, Emperor Augustus wanted to count all the people so he would know how much tax he could collect. Therefore, Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem, since Joseph’s ancestors came from there. However, Bethlehem was overcrowded, and they could not find a place in any of the inns. Eventually, they had to spend the night in a simple stable. That was where the baby Jesus was born. Mary wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no bed for the baby. Not far from this stable, some shepherds were tending their sheep. Suddenly, an angel appeared to them in a bright light. The shepherds were terrified, but the angel said, “Do not be afraid! I bring you good news: Today in Bethlehem the Savior has been born.” Eagerly, the shepherds set off at once and found Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus in the manger.

They were overjoyed at this miracle and later told everyone about it. A little while later, three wise men (sometimes called kings or magi) from a faraway land also set out on a journey. They had seen a particularly bright star in the sky and followed it all the way to Bethlehem. There they found the baby Jesus and presented him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh—very valuable items at that time, typically given only to royalty. These wise men recognized that Jesus was truly special. Thus began the story of Jesus, which Christians around the world still celebrate at Christmas today. It is a reminder that, with Jesus, hope and light came to the people—first in a simple stable, to humble shepherds, and ultimately to everyone who encounters him.
