The dragon egg, nestled deep within my satchel, vibrated with a low, insistent hum that resonated against my ribs. It was a frantic pulse, mirroring the frantic beat of my own heart. I risked a glance over my shoulder. Two guards, clad in the crimson and gold of the King's personal guard, were gaining on me. Their faces, grim and determined, were framed by polished helms. Each footstep echoed ominously in the narrow alleyway. Panic clawed at my throat. I needed to lose them, and fast. Desperation sharpening my senses, I spotted a shadowed doorway across the alley. It was a gamble, but my options were dwindling faster than my hope. With a surge of adrenaline, I sprinted, the egg thrumming louder with each stride. I dove into the darkness, the scent of dust and decay filling my nostrils, and risked a glance behind me. The guards had reached the doorway. "She went in there!" one yelled, his voice echoing in the confined space. I was trapped.
