This was after I left the Army. I was full of enthusiasm then. I was confident that I could accomplish anything. I used to go on strange trips with a friend from college who was free in the evenings. One time, we walked from Seoul to Chuncheon on a whim. I thought, "Walking is no big deal. Let's do it." I loved those kinds of challenges. Before I went back to college, one of those challenges was to travel to rural Japan. Why rural Japan? Why rural Japan? Because my classmates and I were all studying Japanese. We talked about it: "Are we really Japanese majors if we only visit Osaka, Fukuoka, and all the other easy, touristy places that everyone else visits?" That spurred us on, and we changed our plans from a trip to Tokyo to a trip to the remote Japanese countryside.
